Khaled Ballow, chief executive officer of Saudi Arabian Cooperative Insurance Company

Saudi Arabian Cooperative Insurance Company (SAICO) confirmed Khaled Ballow as chief executive officer on 22 October 2026, formalizing his appointment after serving in an acting capacity for five months. The board resolution elevates Ballow from a temporary leadership position to the permanent top job at the Riyadh-based insurer, marking the conclusion of a transition period that began when predecessor Abdulrahman Saleh Al-Obrah departed the company in the summer.

Ballow was initially appointed acting chief executive in late May, following Al-Obrah's resignation announcement in April. Al-Obrah stepped down to accept a chief executive role at Aljazira Takaful, another Saudi insurance firm. The board's decision to move Ballow from acting to permanent status indicates confidence in his leadership during a period of continuity at the insurer. No external search firm involvement was disclosed by SAICO in its regulatory filing to Tadawul, the Saudi stock exchange, suggesting the company pursued an internal succession strategy.

Ballow brings substantial tenure and credentials to the role. He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport in Egypt (earned 2008), a bachelor's degree in administrative sciences from King Saud University (1998), a professional diploma in marketing from the Riyadh Chamber of Commerce and Industry (2003), and a professional insurance certificate from the Chartered Insurance Institute. His career spans more than 27 years in insurance leadership, with 16 of those years at SAICO since joining in 2010. Before his ascent to the top position, Ballow served as vice president of sales and business development, a role that positioned him to understand the company's market dynamics and business development priorities across its product lines.

SAICO operates as a publicly traded joint stock company on Tadawul (ticker: 8100) and is one of Saudi Arabia's established insurance providers with roots tracing to 1952. The company offers comprehensive general insurance coverage including motor, marine cargo, fire, property, engineering, aviation, and medical insurance products to corporate clients, small and medium-sized enterprises, and individual customers. SAICO holds capital of 300 million Saudi riyals and is regulated by the Saudi Central Bank's Insurance Authority.

The promotion of an internal candidate with deep operational knowledge reflects common practice in Gulf insurance leadership transitions, particularly when the outgoing CEO departs on scheduled terms. Ballow's extended history at SAICO and his background in sales and business development suggest the board prioritized continuity and existing market relationships over an external recruitment. The formal confirmation after a five-month trial period may imply the board sought evidence of his execution capabilities before making the permanent commitment, though no specific performance metrics or conditions for the conversion were disclosed publicly.
