Sharad Mathur, managing director and chief executive officer of IndusInd General Insurance

IndusInd General Insurance has appointed Sharad Mathur as managing director and chief executive officer, placing a three decade veteran of the Indian general insurance market at the head of the insurer as it rebuilds under new ownership. The company confirmed the appointment on 20 October 2026, saying it followed the statutory approvals required for the role.

The appointment completes the leadership rebuild at a business that changed hands and changed name after a long period of uncertainty. IndusInd General Insurance was formerly Reliance General Insurance and now sits inside the IndusInd International Holdings group, which acquired the business and has been reconstituting its board and senior management since. In its statement the company pointed to Mathur's record in organisational transformation, distribution expansion and technology led innovation, and set out the priorities it expects him to pursue: customer centricity, digital innovation, insurance inclusion, profitable growth and strong governance. The sequencing matters, because a general insurer under new control needs a chief executive who can hold the distribution network together while the ownership question settles.

Mathur arrives from Universal Sompo General Insurance, where he was managing director and chief executive officer for more than six years and led a transformation that strengthened the insurer's distribution, risk management and technology enabled customer servicing. Before that he held leadership positions at SBI General Insurance and at ICICI Lombard, joining both in their formative stages and contributing to their growth into substantial players in the Indian market. That career covers the three dominant distribution models in Indian general insurance, bancassurance at SBI General, broker and agency scale at ICICI Lombard, and the joint venture structure at Universal Sompo, which is an unusually complete grounding for the job he now takes.

IndusInd General Insurance writes motor, health, property, marine, liability and rural insurance business across India, distributing through agents, brokers, bancassurance partners and digital channels. The company holds one of the larger retail general insurance franchises in the country by policy count, built over two decades under its previous ownership, and it carries a nationwide branch and service network. Its transfer into the IndusInd International Holdings group was among the more closely watched ownership changes in Indian financial services, and the business has been operating under regulatory and market scrutiny through the transition.

Appointing an experienced insurance chief executive rather than a group insider reads as a decision to prioritise underwriting discipline and distribution stability over integration speed. Mathur's last mandate at Universal Sompo was precisely a turnaround of operating quality rather than a growth sprint, and the brief described by the company leans the same way, with governance named alongside growth. The inference, and it should be read as an inference, is that the owners expect the combined ratio and the solvency position to matter more to regulators and to distribution partners over the next two years than premium league table position. The tests will be whether retail renewal rates hold through the rebrand, whether the insurer's solvency margin strengthens, and whether bancassurance partners stay on the panel.
