AIA Life Korea Names Leo Ng Chief Executive Officer Designate

AIA Life Korea has named Leo Ng as Chief Executive Officer Designate, moving the chief financial officer of its Chinese operation into the top job in the group's South Korean life insurance business.

The appointment was reported on 28 September 2026 by several South Korean outlets, including the Korea Times and Business Korea. Ng will take up the role once regulatory approvals are received, which is standard for a chief executive appointment at a Korean insurer and means the effective date has not been fixed.

Ng has spent more than 30 years in insurance, including 12 years with AIA Group. He has been Chief Financial Officer of AIA China since 2016, a period in which that business grew into one of the group's most significant markets. He holds a Bachelor of Mathematics with dual honours in actuarial science and statistics from the University of Waterloo and is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries.

The profile is squarely technical. An actuary who has run finance in the group's largest mainland operation is a very different kind of appointment from a distribution executive or a country general manager, and it suggests the priority in Seoul is balance sheet and product economics rather than headline growth.

That reading fits the market. South Korean life insurance is a mature, heavily intermediated sector operating under a risk-based capital regime that has forced insurers to reprice guarantees, lengthen asset duration and rethink the product mix they sell through agency and bancassurance channels. Margins depend less on new business volume than on the mix between protection and savings products and on how well the liability book is matched. Those are actuarial and finance questions before they are commercial ones.

AIA Life Korea operates in a market where the large domestic insurers hold the dominant share, so the foreign-owned operations compete on specific product niches and on distribution partnerships rather than on scale. A chief executive who has spent a decade managing the finances of a fast-growing Asian operation brings direct experience of how a group balances capital consumption against growth in exactly that position.

The move also continues a pattern across AIA Group of rotating senior finance executives into country chief executive roles. It gives the group chief executives who already understand its capital allocation framework and who have been assessed against it from the inside.

None of the coverage of the appointment named a predecessor, and the company has not published a corporate release of its own, so the transition arrangements in Seoul remain to be set out. Until regulatory approval arrives, Ng holds the designate title and the incumbent leadership remains in place.

The immediate test once he takes up the role will be the product and channel strategy for 2027, which Korean insurers typically settle in the final quarter of the preceding year.
