Cisco has appointed Shane Heraty as Vice President and General Manager for Cisco Middle East, Africa, Türkiye, Romania and CIS (MEA-TRC), effective May 1, 2026. Heraty assumes control of one of the networking giant's most strategically important regions, spanning 80 markets and encompassing some of the world's fastest-growing technology ecosystems. The appointment marks a significant internal promotion for Heraty, who was previously Managing Director of Cisco Africa, and comes as David Meads retires after three decades at the company.
Gordon Thomson, President of Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) at Cisco, endorsed the appointment in measured terms, describing Heraty as a seasoned leader with deep regional understanding and noting his track record driving complex digital transformation. Thomson indicated that under Heraty's stewardship, Cisco aims to strengthen connections across the region's digital ecosystem, accelerate critical artificial intelligence infrastructure development, and unlock technology's full potential. The transition was announced on March 25, 2026, with no external search firm involvement disclosed. Heraty characterized the MEA-TRC region as a hub of innovation and signaled ambitions to accelerate digitalization and AI adoption while boosting regional economies.
Heraty brings three decades of global and regional technology experience, including more than 20 years at Cisco. Most recently, he led Cisco Africa, where he drove the company's continental investment strategy and fast-tracked the Cisco Country Digital Acceleration program across multiple African nations. His career trajectory spans diverse geographies and business segments. He served three years as General Manager for Cisco Qatar, where he resided nearly a decade, and previously led Cisco's business across Scotland, Ireland, and the commercial UK and Ireland operations. His background encompasses partner ecosystems, service provider channels, and enterprise organizations, according to company statements.
Cisco operates as the worldwide leader in networking and security solutions, serving enterprise, service provider, government, and education sectors globally. The MEA-TRC region represents a substantial growth opportunity, characterized by rapid digitalization initiatives in the Middle East, significant emerging market development across Africa, and increasing technology infrastructure investment across Türkiye, Romania, and CIS countries. The region's expanding focus on artificial intelligence infrastructure buildout aligns with Cisco's strategic priorities around next-generation connectivity and security.
Heraty's appointment suggests Cisco views AI infrastructure deployment as a defining competitive battleground in emerging markets. The internal promotion indicates confidence in bench strength within the EMEA organization and represents continuity of strategy rather than a directional shift. Notably, Heraty's background emphasizes scale across disparate markets and partner ecosystem management, suggesting Cisco intends to deepen channel relationships and government partnerships in the region. The appointment also signals that successor planning for major regional roles has proceeded smoothly, with Meads' pending retirement apparently triggering a systematic internal advancement rather than external recruitment.
