Gartner holds its IT Symposium Xpo at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resorts in Orlando, Florida, running from the nineteenth to the twenty second of October this year.

The event is the research firm's flagship gathering for chief information officers and the executives who report to them, and it is one of the few technology conferences whose audience is defined by seniority rather than by specialism. Chief information officers, chief technology officers and chief information security officers make up the core, with a co-located Xpo exhibition running alongside the conference programme.

Why it matters to a board

Technology spending decisions have migrated upward in most organisations over the past decade, and the questions now put to a board are less about systems than about exposure: what the organisation is committing to, over what horizon, and what it cannot easily reverse. Symposium is where the research positions that shape those commitments are first set out for the year ahead, which is why the attendee list skews so heavily to people who sign rather than people who build.

The agenda in recent editions has been dominated by the operating questions that follow an artificial intelligence programme rather than the case for having one. Cost, governance, data readiness and the organisational design needed to absorb the technology are the recurring themes, and they are the themes a board is most likely to be asked about.

Practical detail

The venue is a single resort complex rather than a convention centre, which concentrates the programme and the informal meeting schedule in one place. Gartner has not published an attendance figure or an edition number for this year's event.

Executives attending from outside North America should note that the firm runs separate regional editions of the same franchise, and that the Orlando event is the one that carries the largest share of the vendor exhibition.
