Safa Sharif Abdul Khaliq has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), effective August 31, 2026, succeeding Noora Abdulrahman Jamsheer who led the organisation since 2019. The appointment signals a strategic shift for DANAT as the institution seeks to expand its international partnerships and commercial reach while preserving Bahrain's historic pearling heritage. Abdul Khaliq, who brings over 15 years of government and development sector experience, joins DANAT from Export Bahrain, where she served as Chief Executive and oversaw the agency's evolution from establishment to full operational maturity.
DANAT Chairman Mohamed Ahmed AlSada welcomed Abdul Khaliq's appointment, stating that "she brings extensive leadership experience and a strong track record in institutional development, strategic growth and stakeholder engagement." The chairman noted that her arrival marks "an important step in DANAT's continued evolution as we seek to expand our international partnerships, strengthen our commercial offerings, and further elevate Bahrain's position as the global home of natural pearls." The board separately acknowledged the contributions of Jamsheer, who elevated DANAT's international standing and reinforced Bahrain's reputation as a leading centre for pearl and gemstone expertise during her seven-year tenure. No search firm involvement was disclosed in the appointment announcement.
Abdul Khaliq's career path reflects sustained focus on economic development and institutional building. Prior to leading Export Bahrain, she spent more than a decade at Tamkeen, Bahrain's government-backed labour and economic development fund, where she served as Director of the Investment Department and previously as Manager of Corporate Planning. She began her career in the banking sector, having worked at institutions including Bahrain Islamic Bank and Bahrain Development Bank. She holds an MBA in Project Management from Malaysia, a Bachelor's degree in Business Management with a double major in Finance and Marketing, and has completed Harvard Business School's Executive Certificate in Innovation and Strategy. Abdul Khaliq also serves on the Bahrain National SME Development Board and has represented the Kingdom on national and regional committees including the World Trade Organization's National Committee and the Saudi-Bahraini Coordination Committee for Integrated Industries.
DANAT, established in 2017 by state-backed Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company at the direction of Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa, operates as a world-class gemmological laboratory, education and research centre with particular focus on natural pearls. Licensed by the Bahrain Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Tourism, DANAT provides testing, certification and educational services globally while serving as custodian of Bahrain's ancient pearling heritage, which dates back millennia. The institute works with clients and students worldwide on pearl, gemstone and diamond authentication and offers internationally recognised gemmological qualifications. It also conducts cutting-edge research, including collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on methods to determine natural pearls' geographic origin.
Abdul Khaliq's appointment reflects DANAT's ambition to deepen its commercial footprint and global reach beyond its current role as a specialised testing and research facility. Her background scaling government development agencies suggests the board sees potential to strengthen DANAT's export-oriented partnerships and talent development initiatives. The timing may also reflect strategic evolution in Bahrain's broader effort to advance economic diversification beyond oil and into high-value sectors. Abdul Khaliq herself emphasized in her statement that she intends "to expand the Institute's services and partnerships, further develop Bahraini talent, and enhance DANAT's role as a global centre of excellence for pearls and gemstones," suggesting her mandate extends beyond preservation to active commercial and educational expansion.
