Amir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani was born on June 3, 1980, in Doha, Qatar, as the fourth son of former Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and his second wife, Sheikha Moza bint Nasser Al-Missned. He received his primary and secondary education in Qatar before joining Sherborne School in the United Kingdom, where he graduated in 1997. He pursued higher education at the Royal Military Academy of Sandhurst, graduating in 1998, after which he joined Qatar's Armed Forces to combine military academic study with practical field experience.

On August 5, 2003, he was appointed Heir Apparent and Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. During his decade as Crown Prince, he chaired numerous bodies including the Supreme Education Council, Supreme Council of Health, Board of Directors of Qatar Investment Authority, and led the Supreme Committee for planning Qatar National Vision 2030, launched in 2008. During his 10 years as crown prince, his most visible activities concerned leadership of Qatar's efforts to boost its international stature by attracting major sporting events and acquiring high-profile sports teams, including chairing the organizing committee for the 2006 Asian Games and leading the bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He also orchestrated Qatar's purchase of the Paris Saint-Germain football club.

On June 25, 2013, following his father's announcement, Sheikh Tamim assumed his duties as Amir of the State of Qatar, becoming Head of State and Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces at age 33.
