Smart City Expo World Congress returns to the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona from 3 to 5 November 2026, the largest urban innovation event in the world and the annual clearing house where city governments, utilities, mobility operators, developers and technology vendors meet. The dates are confirmed on both the organiser's event site and the Fira de Barcelona venue calendar for November 2026.

Fira de Barcelona projects more than 27,000 attendees from more than 130 countries and around 1,110 exhibitors, of which 80 per cent are international. The congress programme cites more than 600 international speakers. What distinguishes the event from a conventional trade floor is the seniority of the public sector contingent: mayors and city chief technology officers attend alongside corporate strategy and public sector sales leadership, which makes it a reliable indicator of where municipal procurement is heading.

The 2026 congress is organised into eight tracks: Enabling Technologies, Energy and Environment, Mobility, Housing, Governance and Economy, Living and Inclusion, Infrastructure and Building, and Blue Economy. Housing is the newest of these strands, and the presence of a European Commission housing lead on the speaker programme reflects that.

The event now runs as a cluster rather than a single show. According to the venue calendar, four further congresses sit alongside it at Gran Via on exactly the same dates: Tomorrow.Mobility World Congress, Tomorrow.Blue Economy World Congress, HOW'S Barcelona Housing World Summit and the Barcelona Cybersecurity Congress. Tomorrow.Mobility is co-organised by Fira de Barcelona with EIT Urban Mobility, an initiative of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology, and cites more than 240 international speakers of its own with participation from more than 50 cities. Gastronomic Forum Barcelona runs separately at the Montjuic venue from 2 to 4 November.

Ugo Valenti, Smart City Expo World Congress director at Fira de Barcelona, leads the event, and Marc Rozendal is president of Tomorrow.Mobility. The 2026 agenda names Gergely Karacsony, Mayor of the City of Budapest, and Matthew Baldwin, Head of the Housing Task Force at the European Commission, among its speakers.

For senior executives the commercial logic of attending is that municipal technology is bought on multi year frameworks by committees, and the congress is where those committees are assembled in one place. The addition of a dedicated housing summit is the notable change this year, and it widens the buyer set from transport and energy departments to housing authorities and residential developers.

The cybersecurity strand reflects the same procurement reality from the other direction. As cities connect more infrastructure, the security requirement moves from an information technology line item to a condition of the contract, which is why a dedicated congress now sits inside the cluster rather than beside it.
