Ranen Thakurdin, group chief financial officer designate of Old Mutual

Old Mutual Limited has named Ranen Thakurdin as Group Chief Financial Officer designate, in an announcement published on the eighth of September 2026 through a stock exchange news service notice, reference 23/26, covering both Old Mutual Limited and Old Mutual Life Assurance Company South Africa. Thakurdin will take up the designate role on the first of January 2027 and will become Group Chief Financial Officer on the first of April 2027, subject to regulatory approval.

Thakurdin is currently the group chief risk officer at Old Mutual. He is not yet the group chief financial officer and will not hold that office until the stated date and approvals are in place. The designate period, running for a quarter before the handover, is a standard mechanism in regulated financial services for transferring responsibility for group reporting, capital and investor communication in an orderly way.

He succeeds Casper Troskie, who retires on the thirtieth of April 2027. The overlap between the assumption of the role and that retirement date allows for a period of transition at the end of the financial reporting cycle.

Old Mutual is a South African financial services and insurance group listed in Johannesburg, with operations spanning life assurance, savings, investment, asset management and banking related services. The chief financial officer of such a group carries responsibilities that extend well beyond statutory reporting. They include solvency and capital management under the prudential regime applying to insurers, actuarial and accounting judgement on long duration liabilities, group treasury, and the presentation of results to institutional investors and analysts in a market where insurance earnings are closely scrutinised for the quality and repeatability of their components.

The internal promotion of a serving group chief risk officer into the finance seat is an appointment with a particular character. Risk and finance in an insurance group are adjacent disciplines that draw on the same balance sheet, the same actuarial assumptions and the same capital models, but they answer different questions. A chief risk officer is concerned with exposure, appetite and the resilience of the book under stress. A chief financial officer must convert that same underlying reality into reported earnings, capital generation and a narrative about returns. Executives who have held the risk mandate typically arrive in the finance role with an unusually detailed understanding of where the balance sheet is sensitive, and with established working relationships across the actuarial and capital functions.

The lead time is also worth noting. A succession announced in September 2026 for an office that transfers in April 2027, with a designate period beginning in January, indicates a planned rather than reactive process. For investors, long dated and clearly sequenced finance succession tends to reduce the discount that markets sometimes apply when a chief financial officer departs without an identified successor, because it removes uncertainty about both the timing and the identity of the incoming officer.

The requirement for regulatory approval reflects the supervisory regime applying to South African insurers and financial services groups, under which senior executives in key control functions must be assessed as fit and proper before taking office. The dual announcement covering both the listed holding company and the life assurance entity indicates that the change is relevant to more than one regulated undertaking within the group structure.

For the wider South African financial sector, the appointment reinforces a pattern of large listed groups drawing their most senior finance leadership from within, and of risk leadership being treated as a credible route into the chief financial officer role rather than a separate career track.
