Maitham Abdulla has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Batelco, the principal telecommunications company in Bahrain, in a series of executive promotions announced by parent company Beyon on March 3, 2024. The appointment represents the culmination of a succession planning programme designed to develop internal talent at the regional technology group.

Abdulla assumes the CEO role reporting to Beyon CEO Mikkel Vinter as part of a broader restructuring that elevated three executives from within the organisation. Shaikh Mohamed bin Khalifa Al Khalifa was appointed CEO of Beyon Digital Growth, while Isa Alsabea became Beyon Chief Investment Officer. Beyon stated in its announcement that the appointments were promotions from within and aligned with five years of executive succession planning and national talent development initiatives. The company noted that following these moves, Bahrainis now represent a majority of the Executive Management Team.

Abdulla joined Batelco in 2006 and progressed through senior leadership roles before being elevated to Chief Operating Officer in 2022, a position he held immediately before his CEO appointment. Prior to that, he served as General Manager of Batelco's Consumer Division. He holds more than 15 years of experience across mobile and fixed telecommunications, connectivity solutions, data centres and content services. The company credited him with driving digitisation initiatives and customer experience improvements. Abdulla holds an MBA in Marketing and Business Management from Al-Ahlia University and a BSc in Management Information Systems from NYIT, along with professional qualifications in leadership and telecommunications.

Batelco operates as the leading digital solutions provider in Bahrain, headquartered in Manama. The company serves both corporate and consumer markets through fixed and wireless telecommunications solutions. Its service portfolio includes IP fixed and 5G wireless broadband networks, voice communication and collaboration services, mobility solutions, SD-WAN and MPLS-based regional data offerings, and data centre and hosting services. Batelco is part of the broader Beyon Group, which also encompasses digital companies focused on cybersecurity, connectivity and fintech solutions across the Middle East and North Africa region.

The appointment signals Beyon's confidence in internal bench strength and reflects a deliberate strategy to elevate Bahraini executives to leading roles. Abdulla's progression from COO to CEO represents a conventional career path within the organisation and indicates continuity in operational strategy. His background in consumer markets and digital transformation directly aligns with Batelco's stated focus on customer experience and connectivity innovation. The hire does not constitute an external search or change in strategic direction, instead representing the maturation of succession planning efforts that Beyon has undertaken since 2019 under previous CEO Mikkel Vinter.
