BlueFive Capital, an Abu Dhabi-based alternative investment firm managing more than $15 billion in assets, has appointed Marwan Elaraby as President for the MENA region, effective September 2026. Elaraby, a veteran corporate lawyer and partner at Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher's Dubai office, will be based in Abu Dhabi and report directly to founder and chief executive Hazem Ben-Gacem. The appointment signals BlueFive's intensified focus on regional expansion as the two-year-old firm consolidates financial services assets across the Middle East and pursues cross-border investment opportunities.
The announcement comes as BlueFive has rapidly scaled its regional footprint since launching in late 2024, expanding from initial offices in Abu Dhabi, Bahrain and London to establish a presence across seven major centers including Dubai, Muscat, Singapore and Beijing. Elaraby, who has spent more than three decades navigating MENA markets as a lawyer, investment banker and private equity investor, brings deep expertise in sovereign wealth funds, government-owned entities and family offices. Ben-Gacem described him as bringing regional deep understanding and an extensive network instrumental to the firm's growth trajectory. Elaraby commented on his enthusiasm for BlueFive's vision to bridge capital and opportunity across high-growth emerging economies. No search firm involvement was disclosed in the appointment announcement.
Elaraby's professional journey reflects sophisticated cross-border transactional work across the Gulf and North Africa. At Gibson Dunn, where he joined as partner in June 2024, he leads the Dubai office and specializes in mergers and acquisitions, private equity and capital markets transactions. He has advised ADNOC, Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, on strategic investments and joint ventures including its crude oil trading unit launch and the 2017 IPO of its distribution unit. Before Gibson Dunn, Elaraby spent eight years as managing director at Citadel Capital, now Qalaa Holdings, the Egyptian private equity firm, and served as executive director of investment banking at EFG Hermes. He is ranked by Chambers Global as a leading individual for corporate and M&A work across the Middle East and Egypt, with clients describing him as super-commercial and well-connected. Elaraby holds a Juris Doctor from Columbia Law School and a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from American University in Cairo, and is fluent in Arabic, English and French.
BlueFive Capital, incorporated in Abu Dhabi Global Market, operates three distinct business arms pursuing consolidation opportunities across the fragmented financial services landscape of emerging markets. BlueFive Financial focuses on permanent capital plays in insurance, private wealth and public market brokerage firms. BlueFive Asset Management oversees closed-end funds across private equity, real assets including infrastructure and real estate, and credit strategies. BlueFive Advisory provides institutional M&A, capital raise and debt placement services. The firm closed its flagship Onyx Fund I at approximately $3 billion in 2025 and has completed acquisitions in fleet management and mobility, including a 49 percent stake in LeasePlan Emirates. Ben-Gacem, who spent 30 years at Investcorp as co-chief executive before departing in September 2024, holds a Harvard degree and established BlueFive to target investment opportunities across the GCC, Asia and Latin America.
Elaraby's hiring reflects BlueFive's calculated strategy to strengthen regional operating capabilities and deepen relationships with Gulf institutional capital sources at a moment when alternative asset managers are competing intensely for allocations from sovereign wealth funds and family offices. The appointment can be read as telegraphing operational maturity and senior-level commitment to MENA as BlueFive transitions from startup phase to established regional player. Elaraby's move from law into an operating presidency also signals appetite among Middle East-headquartered investment firms to recruit seasoned transaction professionals into executive leadership, potentially reflecting a belief that deep transactional expertise and government relationships may outweigh traditional investment banking backgrounds in the region. Whether Elaraby's appointment accelerates BlueFive's expected deployment of proposed Asia-focused funds or triggers new fundraising rounds remains to be seen, though the timing suggests the firm is positioning itself to capitalize on renewed M&A activity across the Gulf and Arab world.
