Ann Haydon MBE

GEMS Education has appointed Ann Haydon MBE as Principal of GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, one of Dubai's largest British curriculum schools, effective January 2, 2026. Haydon, who was awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Year Honours for services to British education, joins the school following the departure of Campbell Douglas after nearly five and a half years in the principal position. Her appointment represents a significant leadership transition for the premium Dubai Hills institution and signals GEMS Education's commitment to securing experienced international school leaders to guide its portfolio of schools serving over 200,000 students globally.

Haydon arrives at Wellington Academy - Al Khail from Hong Kong, where she served as Head of Harrow International School since 2017, making history as the first female head in Harrow's global network. Dino Varkey, Group CEO of GEMS Education, commented that Haydon is "an exceptional school leader whose career reflects an unwavering commitment to academic excellence, student wellbeing, and values-driven education," adding that her background across UK and international schools positions her ideally to lead the school "into its next phase of growth." No search firm involvement was mentioned in the announcement. Haydon expressed enthusiasm for joining GEMS, noting the organisation's "unparalleled global reputation for educational excellence."

With more than 25 years of senior leadership experience, Haydon's career has spanned some of the United Kingdom's most respected independent schools. She previously served as Principal of Surbiton High School, the founding school of the United Learning Group, where she held the position from 2008 onwards. She also served as Deputy Headmistress at Guildford High School, both part of United Learning UK. Under her leadership at these institutions, schools achieved 'Excellent' ratings in Independent Schools Inspectorate inspections. At Harrow International School Hong Kong, she oversaw exceptional academic outcomes, with more than 70 percent of A Level grades consistently achieving A* to A. Beyond school leadership, Haydon has held influential governance roles as London Division Secretary of the Headmasters' and Headmistresses' Conference and serves as a Governor of Repton School UK. She holds a degree in economics and geography from the University of Surrey and completed a PGCE.

GEMS Wellington Academy - Al Khail, founded in 2013, is rated 'Very Good' by the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) and 'Outstanding' by the British Schools Overseas (BSO). The school serves approximately 1,200 students from Nursery to Year 13 across its Dubai Hills campus, delivering GCSE, A Level, and BTEC pathways. The school is one of four institutions part of the GEMS Wellington brand in the UAE. GEMS Education itself is one of the world's largest private K-12 education operators, serving nearly 200,000 students across more than 60 schools in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, Europe, and North America. The company, founded in 1959 as a family tutoring business by Indian educators K.S. and Mariamma Varkey, generates over 90 percent of its revenue from UAE operations where it operates as the largest education provider.

Haydon's appointment underscores a broader trend among premium international schools in the UAE to recruit experienced leaders from established UK independent school networks and the wider international education sector. Her dual background spanning both the UK independent sector and Asia positions her to address the specific challenges of managing all-through British curriculum schools in competitive international markets. The appointment also suggests Wellington Academy - Al Khail, which consistently performs above its official KHDA rating across multiple inspection categories, may be positioned for further expansion or enhanced academic offerings under her leadership. Her emphasis on governance, strategic curriculum development, and staff professional development aligns with GEMS Education's stated commitment to strengthening teaching and learning across its global network.
