Zurich Middle East Life announcement, Executive Moves

Walter Jopp has been appointed Chief Executive Officer of Zurich Middle East Life, marking a significant return to the insurer after a 4.5-year absence. Jopp, who previously led the company's Middle East operations from 2016 to 2021, brings more than 26 years of global insurance leadership experience across Asia Pacific, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. His appointment underscores Zurich's commitment to leadership continuity and strategic expansion in the region, which has proven increasingly important to the global insurer's life insurance portfolio.

Walter Kiceleff, CEO of Zurich International Life Solutions, said Zurich was welighted to welcome Jopp back, citing his deep understanding of the Middle East combined with extensive global leadership experience. The appointment reflects the company's confidence in his ability to guide the business through its next growth phase. No search firm involvement was disclosed. Jopp in a LinkedIn statement expressed enthusiasm about returning to the company at what he described as a pivotal time for the region, pledging to deepen customer relationships and drive innovation across the insurance sector.

Jopp's career at Zurich spanned over 24 years prior to his 2021 departure, during which he held senior roles overseeing international business in Latin America and Scandinavia. He served as Global Head of Sales for Zurich's International business, leading sales operations with teams across the Americas, Europe, Middle East and Asia. During his first tenure as CEO of Zurich International Life, Middle East from 2016 to 2021, he grew gross written premiums by over 40 percent and increased profitability by 30 percent, making the regional unit one of the most profitable branches of a global insurer in the UAE. He also launched the region's first compulsory employee benefits plan for DIFC employees and strengthened relationships with international banks and partners. After departing in July 2021, citing a desire to spend more time with family, Jopp became Chief Executive of Islamic Arab Insurance Company (Salama), a Shariah-compliant Takaful solutions provider, from May 2023 until his return announcement.

Zurich Middle East Life, formally known as Zurich International Life Limited, is part of Zurich Insurance Group, a 150-year-old multi-line insurer headquartered in Switzerland and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange. The company has operated in the Middle East for over 40 years, serving customers in the UAE, Bahrain and Qatar. It operates under the Isle of Man established Zurich International Life Limited, with branches licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE, Central Bank of Bahrain and Qatar Financial Centre Regulatory Authority. The group employs more than 63,000 people globally and serves approximately 75 million customers across 200-plus countries and territories. In the Middle East specifically, Zurich has earned more than 25 industry commendations between 2025 and 2026 across customer experience, digital innovation and leadership metrics.

Jopp's return suggests Zurich believes experienced regional leadership with a proven track record of profitability and innovation holds particular value as the Middle East insurance market evolves. His appointment may signal the company's intention to accelerate digital transformation and customer experience enhancements in a competitive market, particularly given his focus on platform innovation during his previous tenure. The fact that Jopp departed Salama after less than three years despite its market leadership position potentially indicates either leadership aspirations beyond the Takaful sector or an opportunity to build a larger organisation that justified his return to Zurich. His experience managing complex multinational stakeholder relationships across regulatory bodies, banks and international partners positions him to navigate the region's evolving regulatory environment and competition from both traditional and Islamic insurance providers.
