ibtm World, the global trade show for the meetings and business events industry, runs from 17 to 19 November 2026 at the Gran Via venue of Fira de Barcelona.
The show is operated by RX and draws 2,500 exhibiting destinations, hotels, venues, event technology providers and suppliers from more than 100 countries.
Its structure is what makes it commercially significant. ibtm World runs on a hosted buyer model: corporate and agency event buyers are matched into pre-scheduled appointments with the destinations, convention bureaux, hotel groups, destination management companies and technology suppliers exhibiting on the floor. The result is a diary of structured meetings rather than an open exhibition, which is why attendance is weighted toward decision makers rather than general visitors.
For the meetings, incentives, conferences and events sector the show is the principal annual fixture in the European calendar, and it is reliably a source of destination announcements, convention centre expansions and corporate travel policy news.
The sector itself has been rebuilding its shape since the disruption of the early 2020s. Corporate meeting volumes recovered but the mix shifted, with more emphasis on fewer, larger in-person gatherings, tighter scrutiny of travel budgets and sustainability reporting, and growing demand from buyers for measurable outcomes rather than attendance figures. Destinations competing for international congresses have responded with incentive funds, infrastructure investment and bids framed around legacy and economic impact.
Barcelona is a logical permanent home. The city is consistently among the busiest international congress destinations in the world, and the Gran Via venue in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat is among the largest exhibition complexes in southern Europe, with the capacity to host both the exhibition floor and the volume of meeting rooms a hosted buyer programme requires.
For hotel groups and convention bureaux the practical value of the three days is the appointment schedule, which is set in advance and is the mechanism through which most of the show's business actually gets done.
