Wellington IT, the Belfast-based software provider serving credit unions across Ireland and the UK, has appointed Mairead Coulter as head of customer engagement, marking a strategic hire as the company pursues expansion in the financial services technology sector. Coulter, who joined the company in 2024, brings nearly three decades of banking experience to a newly created leadership role focused on deepening relationships with credit union clients during a period of accelerating digital transformation in the sector.
The appointment underscores Wellington IT's commitment to strengthening customer-facing operations as the company continues expanding its suite of core banking services and digital transformation solutions across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. Coulter previously spent 28 years at Ulster Bank, where she developed extensive expertise in customer engagement and banking operations before transitioning to the credit union software space. Wellington IT, which operates as part of the Vencora portfolio of financial services companies, has experienced 40 percent growth over the past five years and now employs more than 60 people across Belfast, Dublin and Cork.
Coulter's career at Ulster Bank positioned her at the intersection of banking innovation and customer relationship management during a period of substantial transformation in Irish retail banking. Ulster Bank, established in 1836 and now operating as a NatWest Group brand since 2022, manages customer relationships across personal, small business, and commercial segments in both Ireland and Northern Ireland. Her three-decade tenure exposed her to evolving banking technology, regulatory frameworks, and customer engagement strategies that translate directly to the credit union environment, where Wellington IT has maintained long-standing customer relationships; 16 current clients have partnered with the company for more than 30 years.
Wellington IT has positioned itself as the dominant technology provider to Ireland's credit union sector. The company's core SCION platform services 51 credit unions, with 47 based in Ireland and four in the UK, collectively managing 1.8 million member accounts and processing 234.9 million annual transactions representing approximately 54.9 billion euros in value. The firm offers integrated solutions spanning core banking systems, digital banking platforms, and compliance management tools. Founded over 40 years ago, Wellington IT operates under the Vencora umbrella, a holding structure that combines local market expertise with broader financial technology capabilities. The company remains the only Irish provider offering both credit union-specific software and fully managed IT services.
Coulter's appointment signals that Wellington IT believes competitive advantage increasingly depends on customer engagement capabilities rather than core system functionality alone. The credit union sector faces mounting pressure to deliver digital-first services while preserving the relationship-based trust that distinguishes credit unions from larger financial institutions. By elevating customer engagement to a distinct leadership function, Wellington IT appears to recognize that technology providers must act as strategic partners in member acquisition and retention, not merely suppliers of software platforms. Her background in large-scale banking operations, where customer analytics and personalized engagement have become standard practice, likely positions her to help credit unions compete more effectively against mainstream banks while maintaining their community-focused mission.
