Dennis Whyte has been appointed chief executive officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority Group, the organisation said on 12 August 2026. Whyte, a fusion scientist based in the United States, was selected after an open international recruitment process and takes up the role in autumn 2026, bringing the co-founder of two fusion ventures into the leadership of the United Kingdom's national fusion effort.

He succeeds Tim Bestwick in the post. Bernard Taylor, chairman of the authority, thanked Bestwick for "an outstanding year as UKAEA's CEO". Whyte will lead a workforce of more than 2,600 people across four sites, covering the national laboratory and the subsidiary UK Fusion Energy, which holds the mandate for the STEP prototype power plant at West Burton in Nottinghamshire.

Whyte is a professor at MIT and a former director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center. He co-founded Commonwealth Fusion Systems in 2018 as a spinout from MIT and co-founded Rutherford Energy Ventures in 2024. He is a founder of the SPARC project and has published more than 390 papers and articles. Born in Canada and long resident in the United States, he has been elected a visiting professor in the University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science on moving to the United Kingdom.

The UK Atomic Energy Authority is the national organisation for fusion energy research in the United Kingdom and a government body, and the appointment was announced through a press release published on GOV.UK. The group employs more than 2,600 people across four sites and comprises the national laboratory alongside UK Fusion Energy, the subsidiary that holds the mandate for STEP, the prototype power plant planned at West Burton. The chief executive of the group therefore carries a research leadership role and responsibility for a delivery programme with a fixed site and a defined mandate.

The appointment places a scientist with company building experience at the head of an organisation whose most visible commitment, the STEP prototype power plant, is an engineering delivery programme as much as a research one. The recruitment was described as open and international, and the selection of a candidate based in the United States suggests the board weighted external fusion delivery experience heavily, although the announcement did not rank its criteria. His record in co-founding Commonwealth Fusion Systems and Rutherford Energy Ventures gives him experience of moving fusion research towards private capital, which could matter if the subsidiary seeks commercial partners for STEP. That is an inference from his background rather than a stated plan. The Oxford visiting professorship, taken up on his move to the United Kingdom, indicates an intention to retain an academic base alongside the executive role.
