Dennis Whyte

Dennis Whyte was appointed chief executive officer of the UK Atomic Energy Authority Group in August 2026, taking up the role in autumn 2026 after an open international recruitment process. He is a professor at MIT and a former director of the MIT Plasma Science and Fusion Center.

He co-founded Commonwealth Fusion Systems in 2018 as a spinout from MIT and co-founded Rutherford Energy Ventures in 2024, is a founder of the SPARC project and has published more than 390 papers and articles. Born in Canada and long resident in the United States, he has been elected a visiting professor in the University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science.
