Dr. Abdullah Aljohani, Chief Technology and Operations Officer of Neo Space Group

Saudi Arabia's Neo Space Group has appointed Dr. Abdullah Aljohani as Chief Technology and Operations Officer, a move announced on June 22, 2026 that reflects the company's ambitions to establish itself as a global player in satellite communications and space services. Dr. Aljohani, who brings more than two decades of expertise in satellite communications architecture, advanced wireless technologies and artificial intelligence-driven systems, will oversee the Technology and Operations Division of the Public Investment Fund-owned company, taking direct responsibility for the company's technology strategy, engineering development and operational performance across its growing portfolio of space and satellite communications services.

The appointment comes as Neo Space Group, established in May 2024 as the PIF's first dedicated space sector investment, accelerates its expansion both domestically and internationally. Haithem Alfaraj, Group CEO, described Aljohani's leadership as instrumental to the company's trajectory, noting that his deep technical expertise and understanding of national priorities would enable NSG to scale advanced space capabilities from Saudi Arabia to global markets. The company did not disclose involvement of a search firm in the appointment. Aljohani stated that NSG has a unique mandate to build national capabilities while advancing commercial space services, emphasizing his desire to accelerate innovation and strengthen operational excellence.

Before joining Neo Space Group, Dr. Aljohani served as Executive Director of Strategic Partnerships at the Research, Development and Innovation Authority (RDIA), where he played a foundational role in establishing the organization and advancing national initiatives in 6G technologies, quantum computing and semiconductors. Earlier in his career, he held senior positions at the Communications, Space and Technology Commission (CST), leading international spectrum engagement and contributing to Saudi Arabia's spectrum policy framework. He served as Vice Chairman of ITU-R Study Group 3, representing the Kingdom globally. In academia, Dr. Aljohani is an Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at King Abdulaziz University, where he founded and directed research laboratories focused on next-generation wireless communications. He holds a Ph.D. in Wireless Communications from the University of Southampton, United Kingdom, and is the inventor of 13 U.S. patents spanning IoT, wireless communications, waveguide technologies and free-space optical systems. He is a Senior Member of IEEE.

Neo Space Group operates as Saudi Arabia's national space champion, wholly owned by the Public Investment Fund and positioned as a strategic company within the PIF's Vision Portfolio. The company provides satellite communications, geospatial services and positioning, navigation and timing solutions to customers across government, defense and critical infrastructure sectors, as well as commercial clients. In August 2025, NSG launched the Kingdom's first Earth Observation Marketplace powered by its subsidiary UP42, designed to deliver geospatial data to both public and private sector users. The company has also developed satellite-based communications platforms for aviation applications. As a PIF entity, NSG operates within Saudi Arabia's broader diversification strategy, seeking to develop local capabilities and strengthen the Kingdom's position in the expanding global space economy.

Dr. Aljohani's appointment appears strategically calibrated to bridge the gap between Saudi Arabia's space policy ambitions and commercial execution. His dual expertise spanning regulation and policy at the national level, academic research in wireless communications, and now operational technology leadership at an enterprise scale, suggests the PIF is positioning NSG to move beyond leasing and toward building proprietary satellite capabilities. The timing may also signal confidence in NSG's maturation; under CEO Martijn Blanken, the company has consolidated acquisitions and platforms while pursuing multi-orbit capacity agreements. The appointment of a scholar with deep government connections and 13 patents to his name could accelerate NSG's technology roadmap, particularly in artificial intelligence-driven communications systems and next-generation wireless architectures. However, successfully translating academic innovation and policy expertise into operational excellence at commercial scale remains a distinct challenge, and the success of this appointment will depend on Aljohani's ability to translate his research interests into cost-effective, market-competitive solutions that serve both national and international customers.
