Brookdale Senior Living Names New Chief Sales Officer

Margaret Cabell has been named Chief Sales Officer of Brookdale Senior Living effective June 15, bringing more than 25 years of senior living industry experience to a company undergoing significant operational restructuring. The appointment marks Cabell's return to Brookdale, where she spent 15 years in escalating leadership roles before departing for opportunities across the sector. The move represents a strategic decision by CEO Nick Stengle to consolidate sales authority at the executive level as the nation's largest senior living operator pursues operational excellence and margin improvement across its 543 communities serving approximately 46,000 residents.

Nick Stengle, Brookdale's Chief Executive Officer, characterized Cabell's appointment as instrumental to advancing the company's sales strategy and organizational alignment. Mary Sue Patchett, Brookdale's Chief Operating Officer, emphasized confidence in Cabell's ability to drive sales initiatives across the company's portfolio. No search firm involvement was disclosed in the announcement. Cabell's most recent position was Chief Community Relations Officer and Head of Sales at A Place for Mom, the leading for-profit senior care referral service, where she maintained existing operator relationships while driving occupancy through the platform. Her appointment follows Patchett's own hiring as COO in the company's first appointment to that role in more than a decade, signaling management's emphasis on strengthening commercial and operational functions.

Cabell began her career as a Programs Director with American Retirement Corporation before joining Brookdale's development ranks. During her initial 15-year tenure at Brookdale, she ascended from entry-level positions through community operations to divisional vice president of sales and marketing, overseeing more than 240 communities across multiple southeastern and Texas markets. She departed Brookdale for Harmony Senior Services in January 2020, where she served as Chief Sales and Marketing Officer before being promoted to Chief Executive Officer in June 2022. During her Harmony tenure, she drove a 42 percent NOI growth with strong conversion of referrals from A Place for Mom, demonstrating expertise in partnership economics. Cabell holds a bachelor's degree in psychology from The College of William and Mary and a master's degree from George Washington University. She was recently inducted into McKnight's Women of Distinction Hall of Honor, recognizing her senior living industry impact.

Brookdale operates 543 communities across 41 states and functions as both the nation's largest senior living operator and the third-largest owner of senior living real estate. The company operates independent living, assisted living, memory care and continuing care retirement communities. Brookdale narrowed its net loss to $7 million in first quarter 2026 versus a $65 million loss in the comparable 2025 quarter as the company emerged from organizational restructuring. The company appointed Stengle as CEO in October 2025 following his tenure leading operations at Sunrise Senior Living and roles at Gentiva in hospice and home health services.

Cabell's appointment suggests management believes dedicated C-suite sales leadership can materially improve execution across a portfolio where occupancy gains in April 2026 signaled preliminary transformation success. The timing may also reflect operational pressures emerging from industry dynamics; Brookdale faces persistent high leverage at 8.8 times adjusted net debt to EBITDA as of March 31, 2026, constraining financial flexibility. By placing a sales leader with institutional knowledge of both Brookdale's operations and successful execution at competing platforms into a senior executive role, the company appears positioned to prioritize occupancy recovery and pricing realization. The appointment represents a calculated bet that inside operational expertise combined with recent external perspective can optimize both sales force effectiveness and community-level revenue management during a period when the sector is competing intensely for demand among aging populations.
