Bahrain Food Holding Company, which operates under the Ghitha brand and sits within the sovereign wealth fund Mumtalakat's portfolio, has named Mahmood Zainal as Chief Executive Officer. The appointment places an experienced investment and food-sector executive at the head of one of the Kingdom's food-security vehicles.
Zainal joins from Esterad Bank, where he was executive director of investments, and brings more than two decades of experience across investment and the food and beverage sector. His mandate is to lead the company as it pursues Bahrain's food-security agenda, a priority for a country that imports much of its food and is investing to strengthen supply resilience.
Ghitha, as Bahrain Food Holding Company is known, is a Mumtalakat portfolio company established to consolidate and grow the Kingdom's food assets. Its position within the sovereign fund gives it both the capital and the strategic remit to invest across the food value chain, from production and logistics to retail and distribution, in support of national food security.
Appointing a leader who combines investment expertise with food-sector experience reflects the dual nature of the role. The company is as much an investment holding as an operating business, and its chief executive must allocate capital across food assets while improving how those businesses perform. Zainal's background at an investment bank, paired with food and beverage experience, fits a company that has to think like both an investor and an operator.
The appointment comes as Gulf states place growing emphasis on food security, treating resilient supply as a strategic priority alongside energy and finance. For Bahrain, a sovereign-backed food holding is a tool to reduce vulnerability to import shocks and to build domestic capability. Zainal will be expected to sharpen the company's strategy, strengthen its portfolio and demonstrate progress on the security and commercial goals the fund has set for it.
He takes over a company central to Bahrain's food-security ambitions. The appointment adds to a steady flow of senior leadership moves across the Gulf's sovereign-backed investment and food sectors.
