Anglo American has named Anne Wade as its Senior Independent Director, moving an incumbent non-executive director into the board's most senior independent role at a mining group that has spent the past two years reshaping its portfolio.
The change was announced on 22 October 2026 and takes effect immediately. Wade succeeds Ian Tyler, who has held the Senior Independent Director role since April 2022. Tyler remains on the board as an independent non-executive director, continues to chair the Remuneration Committee and keeps his seats on the Audit and Nomination Committees. The company said the change follows a review by Tyler of his existing board commitments.
Wade joined the Anglo American board as an independent non-executive director in January 2025. She already sits on the Audit, Remuneration and Sustainability Committees, and joins the Nomination Committee as part of this change. The Senior Independent Director acts as a sounding board for the chair, leads the chair's performance evaluation and provides shareholders with an alternative channel to the board.
Stuart Chambers, Chair of Anglo American, said Wade has brought a wealth of insights to the board's discussions.
Wade is Chair of Man Group, the London listed investment manager, a position she has held since October 2023 after joining that board in April 2020. She also chairs its Nomination and Governance Committee.
Her executive career was spent largely in asset management at Capital Group, with a particular focus on infrastructure investment. That included seventeen years at Capital International, where she served as a Senior Vice President and as a director.
She has held several other listed company board seats. Wade was previously a non-executive director of Summit Materials, of John Laing Group, where she chaired the Remuneration Committee for six years, and of Holcim.
The appointment lands at a point of significant structural change for the mining group. Anglo American has been narrowing its portfolio towards copper, iron ore and crop nutrients, and the Senior Independent Director role carries unusual weight during a period when shareholders are assessing a reshaped business against the one they originally bought into.
For a board in that position, the combination Wade brings is a deliberate one. An investor side career at a large asset manager, a current chair role at a listed asset manager, and prior experience of a construction materials business and a cement group give her direct familiarity with both sides of the shareholder conversation. The Senior Independent Director is the director shareholders approach when the normal channels through the chair or the chief executive are not the right route, and that is a role usually filled by someone who has sat on the other side of the table.
The continuity on the Anglo American board is also worth noting. Tyler is not leaving, and the company has framed the change as a rebalancing of responsibilities rather than a departure. That keeps the Remuneration Committee under its existing chair while handing the senior independent duties to a director who has had under two years to build a view of the business, which is a shorter run up than many boards allow for the role.
