Adam Bates

Adam Bates, the marketing executive who transformed Cardano into a global brand, has joined XION as Chief Marketing Officer, effective May 2025. Bates will lead the blockchain platform's push to make Web3 invisible to consumers and accessible to mainstream audiences, drawing on his proven track record of elevating complex technologies into household names. His appointment underscores XION's ambition to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 experiences through consumer-friendly blockchain infrastructure.

XION founder Anthony Anzalone, who operates under the moniker Burnt Banksy, expressed enthusiasm about Bates' arrival, describing him as "a creative beast who gets it, inside and outside of this crazy industry." The company is pursuing an aggressive strategy to position blockchain as seamless infrastructure rather than consumer-facing technology. Bates' mandate is to transform XION from a developer-focused platform into a cultural force that brings blockchain capabilities to mainstream users without requiring them to understand cryptocurrency mechanics. No search firm involvement was disclosed in the announcement.

Bates previously served as Chief Marketing Officer at MultiversX, the blockchain network focused on scalability, and before that held the same title at Input Output (IOHK), the firm behind Cardano, where he operated from 2020 to 2022. During his tenure at Cardano, Bates orchestrated the largest hybrid marketing event in crypto history, won Fast Company's "Top 10 Most Innovative Companies" award, and propelled Cardano's brand ranking above Bitcoin, BMW, and Nestlé for consumer affinity. His efforts helped drive Cardano's token value up 20 times. Before entering blockchain, Bates accumulated marketing experience across leading multinational corporations including Virgin Airlines, Barclays, Emirates, Lego, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Samsung. He spent 11 years at BBDO, the global advertising firm's London office, working across 300+ locations worldwide.

XION is a Layer 1 blockchain purpose-built for consumer adoption through what the company calls "crypto abstraction," removing the technical barriers that typically prevent mainstream users from accessing decentralized applications. The platform enables email or facial recognition login rather than private key management, gasless transactions, and seamless cross-chain interoperability. Founded by Burnt Banksy, XION has attracted backing from prominent venture capital firms including Multicoin Capital, Animoca Brands, Circle Ventures, and others, and has raised more than $36 million to date. The platform claims partnerships with over 150 global brands including Uber, Amazon, Nike, BMW, and Samsung, and has processed millions of on-chain transactions since its testnet launch.

Bates' move signals XION's determination to compete not just on technical merit but on brand narrative and cultural relevance in the crowded blockchain ecosystem. The executive's hiring represents a calculated bet that mainstream blockchain adoption will depend less on explaining distributed ledger technology and more on delivering consumer applications that function invisibly in the background. His appointment appears designed to replicate the approach that elevated Cardano's profile during an earlier cycle of blockchain expansion. Whether XION can sustain momentum in a highly competitive L1 landscape will likely depend in large part on its ability to convert brand awareness into sustained user adoption and developer ecosystem growth, areas where Bates' previous efforts have shown measurable traction.
