Lori Hall-Kimm, chief investment officer for private equity at Abu Dhabi Investment Council

Abu Dhabi Investment Council has appointed Lori Hall-Kimm as chief investment officer, private equity, the sovereign investor said in a statement issued on Wednesday 2 September 2026. The move takes one of Canada's more senior institutional private equity investors into a fund with assets of about 160 billion dollars, and follows the recent arrival of Alain Carrier as executive director of private equity at the council. No effective start date was published with the announcement.

Hall-Kimm will report to Carrier and will oversee investing across the private equity division. Because Carrier himself joined the council only recently in that role, the two appointments together amount to a fresh senior line-up for the asset class. The council did not name a predecessor in the position and did not say when she would take it up. Her previous employer, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, confirmed that she departed as of 21 August 2026, and that Mark Cormier and Roman Gula had been named acting co-heads of its private equity business.

She joined the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan in January 2022 as senior managing director and head of global private equity. Private equity net assets at the plan grew to 24.2 billion Canadian dollars at the end of 2025, from about 20 billion Canadian dollars during her tenure. Before that she spent six years at CPP Investments, most recently as managing director, direct private equity, and nearly 11 years at Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, where she helped establish the London office and led European fund and co-investment activity. Earlier in her career she worked in investment banking at Goldman Sachs and at TD Securities. Her board seats have included Chobani and Merlin Entertainments. She holds an MBA from Columbia Business School and a BBA with honours from the Schulich School of Business at York University.

Abu Dhabi Investment Council is one of the emirate's state investment institutions, with a portfolio put at about 160 billion dollars. The statement described her remit as investing across the private equity division rather than within a single strategy, and set that remit inside a structure headed by Carrier as executive director. The council did not disclose the size of its private equity allocation, the number of investment staff in the division, or any target for deployment.

The appointment fits a pattern visible across the Gulf for several years, in which sovereign investors recruit from the large Canadian pension plans for direct and co-investment capability rather than for fund selection alone. That reading is an inference rather than something the council stated, but her record is consistent with it: her work at Ontario Teachers Pension Plan covered European funds and co-investments, her title at CPP Investments sat in direct private equity, and the portfolio she oversaw in Toronto grew by roughly a fifth over about four years. The absence of a named predecessor, set alongside Carrier's own recent arrival, suggests the council is assembling a private equity leadership layer rather than replacing individuals, though the announcement does not say so. With no start date, no allocation figure and no stated split between funds, co-investments and direct deals, the true shape of the mandate will only become legible through the council's hiring and transaction activity over the coming year.
