Abu Dhabi-based artificial intelligence company G42 has appointed Manu Kumar Jain as Chief Executive Officer of its India operations, signaling the AI powerhouse's strategic expansion into one of the world's largest technology markets. Jain, who led Xiaomi's transformation into India's dominant smartphone brand over nearly a decade, announced the appointment on October 9, 2023, eight months after departing Xiaomi Group in January.

G42 described Jain as "a name synonymous with transformative leadership and ground-breaking success in the consumer technology sector" and said the appointment marks "this new chapter of G42's growth story." In his own announcement, Jain stated his intent to "kickstart a new AI business in India," signaling plans to establish G42's operations in the country from the ground up. The company said it would "soon expand our operations into India, as we continue our journey towards becoming a global leader in AI." Jain's mandate includes exploring new commercial and partnership opportunities to strengthen G42's AI-centric ecosystem in India. No formal board statement from G42 was available in public filings; the announcement came via social media and industry press releases.

Jain joined Xiaomi in May 2014 as India Country Manager when the Chinese smartphone maker was unknown in the Indian market. Working initially from a six-by-four-foot office without a dedicated team, he built Xiaomi India from a single-person operation into the country's leading smartphone brand by market share within three years. In January 2017, he was promoted to Global Vice President overseeing South Asia operations across India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan and Sri Lanka. Before Xiaomi, Jain co-founded Jabong, a fashion e-commerce platform, which became one of India's two largest online fashion retailers before being acquired by Flipkart. Earlier in his career, he worked as an Engagement Manager at McKinsey and Company for approximately five years and as a software engineer at Headstrong. Jain holds a B.Tech in mechanical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi and an MBA from the Indian Institute of Management Calcutta.

G42, founded in 2018 and based in Abu Dhabi, is an artificial intelligence and cloud computing holding company operating in more than 30 countries. The company builds large-scale AI infrastructure, cloud platforms and data center systems deployed across healthcare, energy, smart cities, finance and aviation sectors. G42 has grown to over 25,000 employees from 85 nationalities and counts Mubadala Investment Company, Silver Lake, Microsoft and the Dalio Family Office among its backers. The company recently reorganized three of its nine operating entities, Inception Institute of AI, G42 Cloud and Injazat, into a unified division called Core42 focused on enterprise AI delivery. In April 2024, Microsoft announced a 1.5 billion dollar investment in G42 and joined its board, reinforcing the company's trajectory as a major global AI player.

The appointment fits G42's stated direction of international expansion while leveraging Jain's demonstrated ability to build consumer-facing technology operations in India from inception. Jain's track record establishing market leadership without reliance on heavy brand marketing expenditure aligns with G42's infrastructure-focused model. The hire signals confidence in India as a critical market for AI adoption. However, the appointment represents a strategic pivot for Jain away from consumer electronics into enterprise AI infrastructure, a transition that will test whether his consumer brand-building expertise translates to the more complex, government-and-enterprise-facing AI business.
