Khalid Alia, chief digital and customer experience officer at stc Bahrain

stc Bahrain has appointed Khalid Alia as Chief Digital and Customer Experience Officer, elevating him into the operator's executive leadership team. The appointment was confirmed in a company statement issued in late August 2026 and carried by regional business press.

The role combines two functions that telecommunications operators have increasingly chosen to run together rather than separately. Digital covers the channels and platforms through which customers buy and manage services, while customer experience covers the quality of the relationship across every point of contact. Splitting them tends to produce a well-built application attached to a service operation that has not changed, which is why the combined mandate has become the more common design across the Gulf.

Bahrain is a demanding market in which to hold that brief. It is small, densely populated and among the most thoroughly connected markets in the region, with mobile penetration that has long exceeded the population and fixed broadband coverage that leaves little unserved territory. Growth from adding new subscribers is therefore close to exhausted. Operators compete instead on retention, on average revenue per user, and on persuading existing customers to take additional services. Each of those levers runs directly through the digital and experience function.

The competitive structure sharpens the point further. Bahrain supports three mobile operators serving a population of well under two million, which is an unusually crowded field by any international comparison. Switching costs are low and price differentiation is difficult to sustain. In markets with that shape, service quality and the ease of dealing with the operator become the durable differentiators, because they are considerably harder for a competitor to copy than a tariff.

There is a broader pattern visible here as well. Telecommunications operators across the Gulf have spent several years repositioning themselves as digital services companies rather than connectivity providers, moving into payments, cloud, cybersecurity and enterprise technology. That repositioning depends on being able to sell and support products that behave more like software than like a phone line. Appointing a chief digital and customer experience officer to the executive committee is a structural expression of that strategy, giving the function a seat where capital allocation is decided rather than leaving it inside marketing or operations.

For stc Bahrain specifically, the appointment also reflects the position of the operator within a larger group. Being part of a regional group brings platform and scale advantages, but it also means local units are measured against sister operations on service metrics as well as financial ones. A dedicated executive owner for those metrics is the usual organisational response.

The company did not publish specific targets alongside the announcement. The measures that will indicate whether the appointment is working are the standard ones for the discipline: digital channel adoption, resolution rates without human intervention, churn, and customer satisfaction relative to the other two operators in the market.
