Dr. Ashraf Al-Tahini, Chief Executive Officer of Aramco Digital

Aramco Digital announced the appointment of Dr. Ashraf Al-Tahini as Chief Executive Officer in May 2026, marking a significant leadership transition as the digital subsidiary of Saudi Aramco accelerates its push into industrial artificial intelligence and digital transformation across critical sectors. Al-Tahini, who previously served as Business Executive President and Board Member of Aramco Digital, succeeds Engineer Nabil Al-Nuaim, who guided the company since its inception. The transition reflects a strategic recalibration toward scaling execution and deepening industrial digital capabilities at a company that was founded in 2023 but already operates as a cornerstone of Aramco's diversification ambitions beyond traditional oil and gas.

The appointment signals Aramco Digital's intention to move beyond foundational business development toward operational maturity and market expansion. In announcing the transition, the company stated that Al-Tahini's mandate centers on accelerating the company's strategic direction in industrial AI to enable more connected, intelligent, and resilient digital ecosystems across critical sectors. Al-Nuaim expressed his support for the incoming leadership, stating he was fully confident that the journey of excellence would continue under Al-Tahini's stewardship. The appointment comes as Aramco Digital deepens partnerships with major technology firms; the company signed a shareholders agreement with global consulting firm LTIMindtree in 2024 to create an information technology services company in Saudi Arabia. No external search firm involvement has been disclosed in connection with the appointment.

Al-Tahini brings nearly three decades of experience in digital transformation and advanced technologies, with a distinguished record of building and scaling digital organizations and leading large-scale technology initiatives. He holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Science degree in the same field, and a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia. Prior to his internal role at Aramco Digital, Al-Tahini held senior leadership positions at Saudi Aramco, including Vice President of the Upstream Digital Center, where he managed one of the company's largest digital transformation programs encompassing advanced computing, big data, and AI adoption at scale. Earlier, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Saudi Aramco Upstream Technology Company and director of the EXPEC Advanced Research Center, overseeing a substantial research and innovation portfolio that encompassed management of Saudi Aramco's global research centers in Houston, Boston, Delft, Aberdeen, Beijing, Moscow, and King Abdullah University of Science and Technology in Saudi Arabia. He has received multiple awards from the Society of Petroleum Engineers and has authored numerous technical publications.

Aramco Digital is the digital and technology subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, one of the world's largest energy companies. Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, the company operates as a hybrid cloud solutions provider focused on digital transformation and industrial connectivity solutions. The subsidiary aims to share Aramco's accumulated expertise and experience in designing and deploying digital solutions, positioning itself as a global provider of Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies including artificial intelligence, big data and analytics, unmanned vehicles, blockchain, and Internet of Things applications. As of April 2026, the company employs approximately 295 people. Aramco Digital's mission centers on fostering sustainability and efficiency within the energy industry and beyond, with enterprise offerings built around six key pillars: cloud, connectivity, cybersecurity, data and AI, sustainability, and customer solutions.

Al-Tahini's appointment appears strategically timed as Saudi Aramco navigates the dual imperatives of energy transition and business diversification under Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 framework. The shift to industrial AI and digital ecosystem development suggests Aramco Digital intends to position itself not merely as a vendor of cloud services but as a transformative partner for capital-intensive industries seeking operational modernization. Al-Tahini's deep experience in the upstream oil and gas sector and his track record managing multinational research operations position him to translate Aramco's proprietary digital capabilities into scalable enterprise solutions that can serve sectors beyond energy. The appointment of an internal candidate with 30 years at Saudi Aramco, rather than recruiting externally, indicates the company is prioritizing continuity and embedded institutional knowledge over fresh outside perspectives at this stage of its growth.
