Roberto De Zerbi

Roberto De Zerbi was born on 6 June 1979 in Brescia, Italy, and began his playing career in AC Milan's youth academy before spending 15 years as a midfielder in Italian lower leagues and abroad, accumulating nearly 300 appearances. After retiring in 2013, he began coaching in his native Italy, working his way up from lower divisions. De Zerbi has developed a reputation for playing an attacking-minded possession-based style of football, focusing heavily on shorter build-up from the goalkeeper rather than quick counter-attacks, while favouring a deep double pivot approach in a 4–2–3–1 system whilst deploying an aggressive high press off the ball.

Career history

• Sassuolo (June 2018–2021): Joined Serie A side, earning recognition for his exciting, attack-minded and possession-based approach
• Shakhtar Donetsk (May 2021–July 2022): Managed club to the UEFA Champions League group stage and won the Ukrainian Super Cup—his first piece of silverware as a coach
• Brighton & Hove Albion (September 2022–May 2024): Succeeded Graham Potter; guided Brighton to sixth-place finish in 2022–23, their highest Premier League finish, earning European qualification for the first time in club history
• Olympique de Marseille (June 2024–February 2026): Led club to second-place finish in Ligue 1 during 2024–25 season before mutual departure in February 2026 following poor results

De Zerbi was appointed by Tottenham Hotspur on 31 March 2026 to succeed Igor Tudor as head coach, signing a five-year contract. He managed to guide the club to avoid relegation on the final matchday of the 2025–26 season following a 1–0 win over Everton, and described saving Spurs as the "biggest achievement" of his career.
