Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman

Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman Al Saud was born in 1960 as the fourth son of King Salman bin Abdulaziz and represents a historic shift in Saudi energy leadership. He is the first royal to serve as energy minister, breaking with a tradition spanning the ministry's creation that reserved the position exclusively for technocrats. He graduated from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial Management in 1982 and obtained a Master's degree in Business Administration from the same university in 1985.

Prince Abdulaziz began his career inside the petroleum ministry with unusual patience, spending decades ascending through technical and advisory roles before reaching the top. He served as Director of Economic and Industrial Studies at the Research Institute of King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals from 1985 to 1987, followed by progressively senior positions spanning nearly four decades. He has been a permanent member of the Saudi Arabian delegation to OPEC since joining the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in 1987. During this period, he learned the art of OPEC negotiation from Ali al-Naimi, the legendary technocrat who dominated OPEC for two decades.
