Field Marshal Asim Munir

Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir Ahmed Shah was born in 1968 in Rawalpindi, Pakistan. His father was a schoolteacher and an imam. In 1986 Munir graduated from the Officers Training School at Mangla, Pakistan, where he was awarded the Sword of Honour for being the top cadet of his cohort. He holds a master's degree from the National Defence University in Islamabad, and completed courses from military institutions in Japan and Malaysia. At one point in his career Munir served as a military attaché in Saudi Arabia. During this time he reportedly learned the Qurʾān and became a ḥāfiẓ—a title given to those who can recite every passage in the Qurʾān from memory.

Career History

• Commanded the 23rd Frontier Force Regiment and an infantry brigade
• Force commander in the Northern Areas, Gilgit (through 2016)
• Director General of Military Intelligence (2017)
• Director General of Inter-Services Intelligence (October 2018 - June 2019, approximately 8 months)
• Corps Commander XXX Corps, Gujranwala (2019-2021)
• Quartermaster General before becoming army chief
• Chief of Army Staff (November 2022 onwards)
• Field Marshal (May 2025)
• Chief of Defence Forces (December 2025 - present)

In May 2025 he was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal, the highest military rank in the country. He is the second person in Pakistan's history to hold this rank after Mohammad Ayub Khan in 1959. The top army official—who was promoted to the rank of Field Marshal earlier this year—will concurrently serve as Chief of Army Staff for five years.

In November 2025 the Parliament of Pakistan passed the 27th constitutional amendment, which elevated Munir to the newly created post of chief of defense forces, allowing him to oversee all branches of the armed forces such as the Air Force and Navy. He has held key positions, including director general of Military Intelligence and director general of the Inter-Services Intelligence, Pakistan's top intelligence agency. Asim Munir has taken a firm, nationalist stance, emphasizing a security-first approach and aiming to position Pakistan as a strong regional military power.
