Surgical Information Systems, a leading software and services provider for ambulatory surgery centers, has appointed Tim O'Brien as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately as of June 29, 2026. O'Brien, who most recently served as CEO of Finvi, a healthcare-focused collections and payments software company, assumes the top operational role as outgoing CEO Tom Stampiglia transitions to Chairman of the Board. The appointment signals SIS's commitment to accelerating innovation in the burgeoning ASC market, particularly around artificial intelligence and workflow automation, as the company serves more than 2,900 surgical facilities nationwide.

In announcing the leadership transition, Stampiglia described the moment as pivotal for SIS as the ambulatory surgery center market continues to expand and evolve. He emphasized the company's differentiated model combining advanced software with revenue cycle services on a unified platform, noting that SIS serves over 2,900 ASCs with the integrated approach helping clients strengthen financial performance. Stampiglia, who has over 30 years of healthcare technology experience including prior roles as CEO of Origin Healthcare Solutions and President and COO of WebMD's Practice Services Division, remains engaged in strategy as chairman. The company did not disclose involvement of a search firm in the recruitment process. O'Brien expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating the company has built a strong platform aligned with evolving ASC provider needs and pledging to advance next-generation healthcare technology through AI-driven and agentic workflows.

O'Brien brings more than two decades of leadership experience in healthcare technology and SaaS transformation. At Finvi, he led development of a modern, multi-tenant SaaS platform with integrated payment capabilities for the collections and payments sector. His tenure at Finvi followed nine years at athenahealth, where he held senior leadership roles spanning corporate development, business development, channels, marketing, sales, and commercial operations, contributing to the company's growth in ambulatory healthcare technology. His athenahealth experience positioned him as an executive well-versed in scaling healthcare IT platforms and managing go-to-market strategy across multiple business functions, directly relevant to SIS's strategy of expanding its ASC client base.

SIS, founded in 1996 and based in Alpharetta, Georgia, has established itself as the market leader for ambulatory surgery center software and services. The company ranks as the number one ASC electronic health record vendor by Black Book Research for 11 consecutive years and has received the Best in KLAS Award for ASC Solutions in 2026, 2025, 2023, and 2022. SIS provides comprehensive solutions covering ASC management, electronic health records, patient engagement, compliance technology, and revenue cycle management services. For hospital perioperative teams, the company offers anesthesia information management systems. The company recently expanded its capabilities with AI-powered transcription tools and claims to be the fastest-growing ASC administrative and EHR software platform in industry history following the 2019 launch of its cloud-based SIS Complete platform.

O'Brien's appointment reflects broader consolidation trends in healthcare IT and SaaS infrastructure serving the expanding outpatient surgery sector. The ASC market has grown steadily as healthcare systems seek to shift routine procedures away from hospital operating rooms to lower-cost independent facilities. SIS's positioning as an integrated software-plus-services provider positions it to capture market share from fragmented point-solution competitors, particularly as surgery center operators grapple with rising complexity in regulatory compliance and revenue cycle management. O'Brien's demonstrated success in scaling SaaS platforms and his fluency across sales, marketing, and operations functions suggest the board sees opportunity to accelerate market penetration and potentially pursue growth through acquisition or geographic expansion. His shift from collections-focused fintech at Finvi to ASC-focused software represents a strategic pivot toward higher-margin specialty healthcare IT, which could indicate SIS's confidence in the durability of its market position and its plans for aggressive growth initiatives.
