Ilya Sutskever

Born in 1986 in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia, Sutskever is a computer scientist specializing in machine learning and deep learning. At the University of Toronto, he earned a bachelor's degree in mathematics (2005), a master's degree in computer science (2007), and a PhD in computer science (2013) under Geoffrey Hinton.

In 2012, Sutskever co-created AlexNet with Alex Krizhevsky and Geoffrey Hinton, a convolutional neural network trained to identify objects in images with far greater accuracy than competing approaches, effectively changing the AI field overnight. He then joined Hinton's spinoff DNNResearch as a postdoc, which Google acquired in 2013.

Sutskever is one of the most highly cited computer scientists in history, having won the NeurIPS Test of Time Award for his lasting impact on AI research three times in a row (2022–2024). In 2022, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and in 2023 and 2024, he was included in Time's list of the 100 most influential people in AI. In 2026, he received the National Academy of Sciences Award for the Industrial Application of Science.

What Sutskever brought to OpenAI: As Chief Scientist, he was instrumental in establishing the organization's "scaling ethos"—the conviction that increasingly large neural networks trained on more data could achieve breakthrough capabilities. His technical leadership bridged theoretical deep learning research with practical large-scale language model development, culminating in ChatGPT.
