Mira Murati

Mira Murati was born December 16, 1988, in Vlorë, Albania. At age 16, she won a United World Colleges scholarship to study at Pearson College on Vancouver Island, graduating in 2007 with an International Baccalaureate. She then earned a Bachelor of Arts from Colby College in 2011 and a Bachelor of Engineering in mechanical engineering from Dartmouth College's Thayer School of Engineering in 2012.

Murati interned as a summer analyst at Goldman Sachs in Tokyo in 2011, then briefly worked for Zodiac Aerospace before joining Tesla in 2013 as a product manager on the Model X. From 2016 to 2018, she worked for augmented reality startup Leap Motion as vice president of product and engineering, focusing on human-computer interaction technology.

As CTO, Murati led OpenAI's work on ChatGPT, DALL-E, Codex and Sora while overseeing research, product and safety teams. She was ranked 57th on Fortune's list of the 100 Most Powerful Women in Business of 2023 and featured in TIME's 100 Most Influential People in AI in 2024. In June 2024, Dartmouth College awarded her an honorary Doctor of Science for democratizing technology and advancing a better, safer world. In November 2023, she briefly became interim CEO following Sam Altman's removal, serving three days before being replaced.

In September 2024, Murati announced her departure from OpenAI to pursue her own exploration. In February 2025, she launched Thinking Machines Lab with approximately 30 researchers and engineers from competitors including Meta, Mistral, and OpenAI. The company raised $2 billion in seed funding at a $12 billion valuation led by Andreessen Horowitz in April 2025.
