Stagwell, the digital-first marketing network, has appointed Sunil John as Senior Advisor for the Middle East and North Africa region, effective September 2024. John will lead the company's new MENA office and oversee regional growth initiatives as Stagwell pursues expansion beyond North America.

John will head Stagwell's forthcoming MENA office, spearheading growth and enhancing collaboration among local agencies and partners while developing new client solutions. The role leverages his extensive regional network to support brands seeking regional and global reach. The appointment comes as Stagwell announced its intent to acquire Consulum, a government advisory firm specializing in strategic communications and public policy across MENA. John said in a statement: "I am excited to join Stagwell and contribute to its unique technology-driven offering in the marketing services landscape. The opportunity to integrate my experience, my love of research and insights, and my focus on digital transformation and technology with Stagwell's innovative approach will bring value to a region that is one of the fastest growing in the world."

John brings over three decades of regional experience to the role. He founded ASDA'A, an independent PR consultancy established in 2000, which merged with Burson-Marsteller in 2008 to form ASDA'A Burson-Marsteller, ultimately becoming part of the WPP Group. During his tenure at ASDA'A, he launched Proof Communications, a digital and design firm; OnePoint5, an ESG advisory; and led the Arab Youth Survey, a flagship research initiative. John has been named Best PR Professional in the Middle East by PRWeek in both 2023 and 2020. He left his role as President of ASDA'A BCW in early 2024, stepping down after nearly a quarter century leading the company's MENA operations.

Stagwell operates as a network of over 70 agencies employing roughly 13,000 specialists across 34 countries. Headquartered in New York with significant offices in Washington, DC, the company was created through the August 2021 merger of MDC Partners and Stagwell Media, with Mark Penn serving as Chairman and CEO. Stagwell delivers integrated marketing services spanning creative, performance media, research and analytics, and communications through a proprietary technology platform called the Stagwell Marketing Cloud. The company reported revenues of approximately $2.8 billion and is publicly traded on the NASDAQ under the ticker STGW. In 2024 to date, Stagwell has acquired seven firms globally, including operations in Israel, the U.K., France, and Brazil, as it pursues its stated goal of doubling revenue beyond North America by 2025.

The appointment signals Stagwell's intensified focus on the MENA region as a key growth market. John's deep familiarity with regional communications dynamics and his established relationships with local agencies and brand leaders directly support Stagwell's expansion strategy. The hire fits the company's broader pattern of senior advisor appointments in emerging markets and its efforts to deepen local presence through established regional figures. John's background in research, digital transformation, and integrated communications aligns with Stagwell's stated capabilities, though his advisory rather than executive title suggests a focused mandate on market development rather than operational leadership of the new office.
