OpenAI Appoints Motti Hadas as Founding GTM Lead in Israel, Shifting Strategy After Years of Remote Operations

OpenAI has appointed Motti Hadas as its founding Go-To-Market hire in Israel, marking a strategic shift for the generative artificial intelligence company in one of the world's most intensive AI-adopting markets. Hadas announced the appointment on LinkedIn on September 30, 2026, following two months of internal denials that OpenAI was planning any local presence in the country. The role positions him to develop sales and business development operations focused on Israel's digital-native startup ecosystem, ending years of OpenAI's remote-only approach to the Israeli market.

Hadas' appointment follows OpenAI's hire of a senior executive who previously led Amazon Web Services' startup operations in Israel, and reflects competitive pressures from rival Anthropic, which has gained traction among Israeli startups. In his LinkedIn post, Hadas stated his focus would be on bringing OpenAI's technologies to Israel's digital-native community and helping local companies build AI-driven products. He thanked Nicolai Skabo and Clement Andre for their trust and welcome, signaling direct sponsorship from OpenAI's leadership. An account director role focused on Israeli technology companies is also being recruited, though listed as based in Paris, it is expected to be filled by someone working from Israel and reporting to the company's European operations.

Hadas brings more than a decade of enterprise software sales experience to the role. He joins from the data and analytics sector, where he has held country leadership for Israel at Databricks and a regional director role at MongoDB covering Israeli and broader EMEA markets, working in both cases with the digital-native and cyber segments that dominate local enterprise technology buying. His earlier career included roles as Vice President at Matrix IT and various sales leadership positions spanning open-source software and enterprise technology. Hadas holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Bar-Ilan University and an MBA from the College of Management-Academic Studies. He has also served as a mentor with Google for Startups Israel and was a member of MongoDB's Global Partner Advisory Council.

OpenAI, founded in 2015 and now valued at $852 billion following a March 2026 funding round, is one of the world's most valuable AI companies. The San Francisco-based firm employs approximately 4,500 people globally and generated $13.1 billion in revenue in 2025. OpenAI has historically concentrated its international expansion on sales and business development operations rather than engineering centers, allowing it to engage startups at their inception and scale commercial relationships as their spending grows. The company's move into Israel comes as it competes with Anthropic and Google for enterprise adoption in a market where Israeli startups have gravitated toward Claude and other competing AI models.

OpenAI's Israel expansion appears to signal a deliberate competitive response to Anthropic's growing presence in the region. Company insiders stated two months before Hadas' appointment that no plans existed to launch Israeli operations, but the hiring sequence and timeline suggest OpenAI revised this strategy after observing rival momentum. The structure of Hadas' role, officially focused on EMEA but primarily concentrated on Israel, is typical of early-stage international markets in OpenAI's playbook. If the Israeli operation gains traction, people familiar with the company's plans indicate it could add a country manager position to lead a dedicated local sales office. For now, Hadas will work to convert what OpenAI characterizes as one of the world's heaviest AI-using markets into paying enterprise customers, a transition from grassroots adoption to commercial licensing that remains incomplete despite years of remote engagement.
