Princess Haya bint Al Hussein was born on 3 May 1974 as the daughter of King Hussein of Jordan and his third wife, Queen Alia. She completed her early education in Jordan before attending Badminton and Bryanston Schools in England, and is a graduate of St Hilda's College, Oxford, with a Bachelor of Arts in Politics, Philosophy and Economics.
She represented Jordan at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and was a two-term President of the International Federation for Equestrian Sports (FEI). At age 13, Princess Haya was the first female to represent Jordan internationally in equestrian sport in showjumping, and won an Individual Bronze Medal in the Pan-Arab Equestrian Games in 1992. She was elected President of the Fédération Équestre Internationale (FEI) in 2006 and served in that role through 2014.
In 2003, Princess Haya founded and became Chairperson of Tkiyet Um Ali – the first food aid NGO in the Arab World. She also served as World Food Programme Goodwill Ambassador from 2005 to 2007, the first Arab and the first woman to serve in this role. In 2007, she was appointed Chairperson of the International Humanitarian City (IHC) and was named a UN Messenger of Peace by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. During her tenure, International Humanitarian City grew to become the world's largest and busiest logistics hub for humanitarian aid, hosting 9 United Nations agencies and 89 NGOs and commercial entities.
Princess Haya served as Chairperson of Dubai Healthcare City Authority from 2011 until 2019, and as President of the UAE Nursing and Midwifery Council from 2009 until 2019 and contributed to the establishment of The Al Jalila Foundation for medical research and education in April 2013. She also oversaw the design and construction of the Al Jalila Children's Specialty Hospital.
