Michael McGrath

Michael McGrath is the Irish Commissioner responsible for democracy, justice, the rule of law and consumer protection in the second von der Leyen Commission. Born on 23 August 1976 in Cork, Ireland, and educated at University College Cork, McGrath brings extensive experience in both finance and public service to this role. He holds a bachelor's degree in commerce from University College Cork (1997) and professional experience includes being a chartered accountant at KPMG (1997-2001), financial controller at RedFM (2001-2003), and head of management information and systems at University College Cork (2003-2005).

McGrath was an elected member of the Irish Parliament representing Cork South-Central constituency from May 2007 to November 2024. Between 2011 and 2020 he was lead opposition spokesperson on finance on behalf of Fianna Fáil. As Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform from 2020 to 2022, McGrath was responsible for bringing forward Ireland's €165 billion National Development Plan 2021-2030 and negotiating two public sector-wide pay agreements. He also developed Ireland's National Recovery and Resilience Plan under the EU's Recovery and Resilience Facility and was responsible for the Brexit Adjustment Reserve fund and the development of the Peace Plus Programme.

As Minister for Finance from December 2022 to June 2024, McGrath had a key role in decisions made across government and was Ireland's representative at the Eurogroup and Ecofin meetings of European Finance Ministers. Before joining the Irish Parliament, McGrath was an elected local government representative on Cork County Council (2004-2007) and Passage West Town Council (1999-2007).
