Perseus Mining Limited has appointed Tommy McKeith, a geologist with more than 30 years of experience in global gold exploration and mine development, as an additional independent non-executive director effective immediately. McKeith, who previously led greenfields exploration and project development at major mining company Gold Fields Limited and served as chief executive of Troy Resources Limited, brings deep expertise in discovery and mine development across Africa, a critical asset as Perth-based Perseus pursues an ambitious expansion strategy centered on developing the Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania and extending mine lives at existing West African operations.
The appointment marks the completion of what Non-Executive Chairman Rick Menell described as an important phase of the company's board renewal process. Menell said McKeith's track record at Gold Fields in global greenfields exploration and growth, combined with his operational experience as Troy Resources CEO and current board positions across multiple mining companies, will be valuable as Perseus advances its growth pipeline. McKeith currently serves as a non-executive director at Thungela Resources, Arrow Minerals, and Evolution Mining, and chairs Ordell Minerals. The appointment was not publicly linked to any search firm involvement.
McKeith is a geologist by training who earned his undergraduate degree in geology from the University of the Witwatersrand, along with graduate credentials in mining engineering and an MBA. During his tenure at Gold Fields, he led exploration teams that made major gold discoveries across southern Peru, Kyrgyzstan, Chile, Canada, Mali and Australia. He was instrumental in securing Gold Fields' 2001 acquisition of the St Ives and Agnew mines from WMC Resources, establishing the company as a significant Australian gold producer. Beyond his executive roles, McKeith has been involved in multiple successful mine acquisitions and development projects throughout his career, drawing on experience across bulk, base and precious metals across numerous jurisdictions.
Perseus Mining is an Australia-based gold producer with operations spanning West Africa and expanding into East Africa. The company currently operates three gold mines: Edikan in Ghana and Sissingué and Yaouré in Côte d'Ivoire. In 2024, Perseus acquired the Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania through its takeover of OreCorp Limited, representing the first major gold mine development in that country in 17 years. The company committed 523 million dollars to develop Nyanzaga, with first production targeted for the first quarter of 2027. Perseus produced nearly 497,000 ounces of gold in the year ending June 2025 and has ambitious plans to become a four-mine producer generating 500,000 to 600,000 ounces annually.
McKeith's appointment reflects Perseus's strategic emphasis on building technical depth in exploration and project development as it navigates concurrent expansion initiatives. The company is simultaneously managing underground development at its Yaouré operation in Côte d'Ivoire and constructing the Nyanzaga mine from discovery through production, complex undertakings in emerging markets requiring both geological expertise and mining execution capability. By bringing aboard a director with three decades of successful discoveries and development experience across African jurisdictions, Perseus appears to be positioning itself to manage execution risk on multiple growth fronts while maintaining operational discipline at existing mines undergoing ore source transitions. McKeith's extensive board network across Evolution Mining, a major Australian producer, and other explorers also expands the board's access to industry relationships and operational benchmarking data relevant to mid-tier gold production and cost management.
