About Sir Mark Tucker

Sir Mark Edward Tucker was born on 29 December 1957 and is a British businessman with over 40 years of experience in financial services across Asia, the United States, the United Kingdom and Africa. He has spent over 30 years based in Hong Kong, establishing himself as a key figure in Asian financial markets.

Tucker became non-executive Group Chairman of HSBC Holdings plc on 1 October 2017, succeeding executive chairman Douglas Flint. He was HSBC's first-ever chairman to be selected from outside the company. During his eight-year tenure, he provided strategic guidance and clarity to the management team, streamlined the Board and oversaw material improvements to the Group's people succession and governance processes.

Tucker provided excellent stewardship of the bank through the COVID-19 pandemic and led the Group CEO succession process. He deepened the Group's relationships with key clients, regulators and investors around the world. Sir Mark stepped down as HSBC Group Chairman and as a member of the Board with effect from 30 September 2025.

Education

Tucker studied Business Management at the University of Leeds and qualified as an accountant at PricewaterhouseCoopers. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant in England and Wales in 1985 and received an Honorary Doctor of Laws from the University of Leeds in 2022.

Honors and Current Roles

In June 2024, Mark was honoured with a Knighthood by His Majesty the King in recognition of his services to the economy. He is also non-executive Group Chairman of the Discovery Group of South Africa and served as a Member of the Court of The Bank of England and an Independent Non-Executive Director of Goldman Sachs Group.
