Anish Ahuja, managing director of Whirlpool of India

Whirlpool of India has appointed Anish Ahuja as managing director, choosing a former senior executive of the company who left for a rival appliance maker and is now returning to run it. The appointment was disclosed on 26 October 2026 and takes effect at the start of the next Indian financial year, on the first of April in 2027.

Ahuja brings more than thirty two years of experience across sales, customer service and supply chain management, a profile weighted towards the operating end of the appliance business rather than towards brand or finance. He is currently chief operating officer of Elica India, the Indian arm of the Italian kitchen appliance group, a role he took up at the start of September this year. Before that he spent a long period inside Whirlpool of India as vice president for service, where he carried full responsibility for the service profit and loss account and reported directly to the managing director. He holds a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Pune University and a master's in business administration from the Symbiosis Institute of Management Studies.

The choice is notable for what it says about where the board believes the business is strained. Service and supply chain are the parts of an Indian appliance business that decide repeat purchase and dealer loyalty, and they are also the parts that have been hardest to run through the past few years of channel disruption and component cost volatility. An executive who has owned the service profit and loss account inside this specific company, and who has since seen a competitor's operating model from the inside, arrives with a very particular kind of knowledge rather than a general management brief.

Whirlpool of India Limited is listed on the National Stock Exchange of India and the BSE and is the Indian subsidiary of the American appliance maker Whirlpool Corporation. It manufactures and sells refrigerators, washing machines, air conditioners, microwave ovens and small domestic appliances, operating plants in Maharashtra, Haryana and Puducherry and selling through a national network of dealers, modern retail and online channels. The parent group has been reducing its shareholding in the Indian business, which has made the governance and leadership of the listed entity a matter of closer market attention than it once was.

The handover has been set a long way in advance, with more than five months between disclosure and the effective date, which is itself a signal. A board that announces a managing director this far ahead is usually trying to remove uncertainty from the dealer channel and the employee base rather than to move quickly, and the fact that the incoming executive is an alumnus rather than an outsider cuts the learning curve further. That reading is an inference and not company guidance. The tests over the first year will be whether Whirlpool of India holds its share in refrigeration and washing against aggressive domestic competition, whether service costs fall as a share of revenue, and whether the parent's intentions for its shareholding become clearer under the new leadership.
