Microsoft South Africa has appointed Koketso Kekana as chief financial officer, bringing in a finance executive whose career has been built in consumer goods, pharmaceuticals and online retail rather than in software. The appointment was reported on 13 October 2026, after Kekana announced it herself, saying she was stepping into the role with excitement, curiosity and gratitude.

Microsoft South Africa is the regional subsidiary of Microsoft Corporation, based in Bryanston, Johannesburg, and coordinates operations across West, East and Central Africa. The company did not name a predecessor and did not state an effective start date.

Kekana joins from Amazon, where she was head of retail finance and strategy from 2025 to 2026. Before that she held commercial finance roles at Diageo from 2023 to 2025, including commercial finance manager for South Africa and commercial finance manager for emerging markets and the Indian Ocean. She was a revenue manager at Sanofi from 2020 to 2023, and began her career as a financial analyst at Procter and Gamble, a position she held from 2015 to 2019.

She holds an MBA from Stellenbosch Business School, awarded this year, and the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation, which she obtained in 2020.

The shape of the hire is worth noting. Microsoft's African business is increasingly a question of monetising cloud and artificial intelligence capacity rather than of licensing software, and that shifts the finance function from recognising predictable annual contracts towards managing consumption revenue, which moves with customer usage month by month. That is closer to the problem a retail finance head or a commercial finance manager solves than to classical software accounting, and it is a reasonable explanation for recruiting outside the technology sector.

The regional remit sharpens the point. Running finance across West, East and Central Africa from Johannesburg means working across a wide spread of currencies, several of them subject to repatriation constraints, with customer bases at very different stages of cloud adoption. Commercial finance experience across emerging markets, which Kekana accumulated at Diageo, maps onto that more directly than a career inside a single market would.

What the appointment leaves open is capital allocation. Microsoft has been committing data centre investment across the continent, and decisions about where regional capacity is built are made well above a country subsidiary. The subsidiary finance chief's influence sits in the demand case that supports those decisions, which makes the quality of Kekana's consumption forecasting the most consequential part of the job and the hardest for outsiders to observe.
