Danaher Corporation has appointed Julie Sawyer Montgomery as President and Chief Executive Officer, effective October 1, elevating a longtime internal leader who most recently served as Executive Vice President with responsibility for the company's Diagnostics platform. The NYSE listed life sciences and diagnostics group, which trades under the ticker DHR, announced the appointment on August 3, 2026, and said Sawyer Montgomery will also join its Board of Directors when she takes the role.
She succeeds Rainer Blair, who is retiring after roughly six years as chief executive. Blair will step down on the same date and continue as a senior advisor until March 31, 2027, a handover the company framed as designed to ensure a seamless transition. During his tenure Blair oversaw a broad reshaping of Danaher's portfolio toward life sciences and diagnostics and guided the organization through the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sawyer Montgomery brings nearly 25 years of experience across healthcare, commercial operations, and research and development. She joined Danaher in 2017 at Beckman Coulter Diagnostics, where she led commercial operations and R&D before becoming President of that business in 2020. In 2023 she was named Vice President and Group Executive of the Danaher Diagnostics Platform, and she most recently held the title of Executive Vice President. Earlier in her career she held leadership roles at Hospira Infusion Systems, Boston Scientific, and Boston Consulting Group. She holds a bachelor's degree in economics from Columbia University, a Master of Music from the Eastman School of Music, and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
The choice signals continuity in strategy paired with a mandate to accelerate growth. Under Sawyer Montgomery, Danaher's Diagnostics business grew from about 6.0 billion dollars in revenue in 2017 to roughly 11.0 billion dollars today, while operating profit approximately tripled. She also led the company's recently completed acquisition of patient monitoring firm Masimo and its pending acquisition of StatLab, deals that extend Danaher's reach in clinical diagnostics. Chairman Steven Rales framed the transition as arriving at an opportune moment, with room to accelerate growth across the enterprise.
The appointment matters because it places an operator with deep diagnostics experience at the helm of a company navigating a period of integration and repositioning. Danaher must absorb the sizable Masimo deal, extend the reach of its Danaher Business System across its Life Sciences and Diagnostics units, and rekindle growth after a stretch of uneven demand in several of its end markets. An internal promotion reduces execution risk during that integration and reflects the board's confidence in the company's existing operating playbook rather than a call for wholesale change.
Danaher said the leadership change does not alter its previously communicated third quarter and full year 2026 guidance, a signal intended to reassure investors that the transition will not disrupt near term performance. The company also disclosed special equity incentive awards for key leadership members and founders in conjunction with the appointment. With roughly 60,000 associates worldwide, Danaher enters its next chapter under a chief executive who has spent nearly a decade inside the business she will now lead.
