Oman Duty Free has appointed Sayyid Nasr Al Busaidi as its Chief Executive Officer, a move the national travel retail company has described as the start of a new phase in its growth strategy.

Oman Duty Free is the national company responsible for travel retail and related commercial activities in the Sultanate. Its mandate extends beyond airport concessions, and under its new leadership the company intends to strengthen its domestic retail offering while developing opportunities in international markets.

Al Busaidi brings extensive experience in retail transformation and commercial leadership. He most recently served as an executive director at Transom Handling, a subsidiary of Oman Airports, and previously held the position of chief postmaster general at Oman Post. That combination of aviation services and postal logistics experience positions him to lead a retail business whose performance is closely tied to passenger traffic and cross border commerce.

In his new role, Al Busaidi is expected to enhance the shopping and customer experience across Oman Duty Free outlets, strengthen partnerships with international brands and service providers, and create new opportunities for Omani businesses, entrepreneurs and talent. The company has signalled that expanding its retail footprint at home and exploring selective opportunities abroad will be central to the strategy he inherits.

The appointment comes as travel retail operators across the Gulf compete to capture rising passenger volumes and to diversify beyond traditional airport concessions. For Oman, where tourism and logistics feature prominently in national economic diversification plans, installing a commercially experienced chief executive at the national duty free operator reflects the sector growing strategic weight.

Regional duty free groups are investing heavily in digital retail, loyalty programmes and expanded product ranges, and Al Busaidi inherits a mandate to keep pace with those trends. His track record in commercial leadership will be tested as Oman Duty Free seeks to grow both its airport and domestic operations while deepening relationships with global brand partners.

The leadership change also underscores a broader pattern across the Gulf, where national operators are increasingly appointing executives with cross sector commercial backgrounds rather than pure retail specialists, betting that experience in logistics, aviation and customer operations will translate into stronger travel retail performance.

Oman has placed tourism, aviation and logistics near the centre of its long term economic diversification agenda, and travel retail sits at the intersection of all three. A stronger duty free operator can capture more spending from the passengers moving through the country airports while supporting local suppliers and brands, making the leadership of the national operator a matter of wider commercial interest.

Success in the role is likely to be measured by growth in retail revenue, the quality of the brand partnerships Al Busaidi is able to secure, and the pace at which the company extends beyond its established airport footprint. With regional competitors moving quickly, the early priorities he sets are expected to shape how Oman Duty Free positions itself for the next stage of its expansion.
