Company Overview
Saxo Bank is a Danish investment bank specialising in online trading and investment, headquartered in Copenhagen. The firm was established in 1992 by Kim Fournais and Lars Seier Christensen as the brokerage Midas Fondsmaeglerselskab, and adopted the Saxo Bank name in 2001 after receiving a Danish banking licence. It operates a multi-asset trading platform serving retail clients, institutional partners and white-label banking customers, and reported passing 1.5 million clients in December 2025.
Saxo Bank is regulated as a Danish bank and licenses its platform technology to other financial institutions alongside its own direct client business, giving it both a consumer brokerage and a business-to-business technology arm.
Ownership changed materially over 2025 and 2026. Geely Financials Denmark, a subsidiary of Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, had been the largest shareholder since 2018. In March 2025 the Swiss private bank J. Safra Sarasin Group agreed to acquire roughly 70 percent of the shares from Geely Financials Denmark and Mandatum plc for about 1.1 billion euros. J. Safra Sarasin completed the purchase of approximately 71 percent on 2 March 2026, with co-founder Kim Fournais retaining about 28 percent.
