David White, former chief executive of New Zealand Cricket, has been appointed chief executive officer of the DP World International League T20, the UAE's franchise-based Twenty20 cricket competition. White joined the league in September 2023 and will be based in Dubai on a full-time basis, leading the operational and commercial strategy of the emerging league.
The appointment came as the ILT20 was building momentum following its inaugural season in early 2023, which concluded with Gulf Giants defeating Desert Vipers in the final. DP World ILT20 Chairman Khalid Al Zarooni said that White's appointment reflected confidence in his experience. "As one of international cricket's successful and respected chief executives he will be a great asset to us with his vast experience and recognition. White's cricket knowledge, commercial acumen and international event management experience will be a great advantage as we build on the success of DP World ILT20's inaugural tournament," Al Zarooni said. White acknowledged the scope of the role, stating that being invited "to help build a successful and sustainable league that will play an important role in the development of UAE players, and the promotion of cricket in the UAE and the Middle East, is a great honour."
White played two Tests and three One Day Internationals for New Zealand as an opening batsman during a 1990 tour of Pakistan, and later played domestic cricket for Northern Districts. He holds a degree in accountancy from Massey University and a qualification as a physical education teacher. After his cricket career ended, White spent nearly three decades in sports administration, serving as chief executive of Auckland Rugby and Wellington Rugby before joining New Zealand Cricket in December 2011. He remained chief executive of New Zealand Cricket for over a decade until his appointment to the ILT20.
The DP World International League T20 is a professional Twenty20 franchise league sanctioned by the Emirates Cricket Board. The league features six teams competing across venues in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. Since its founding in 2022, the ILT20 has attracted major franchise owners including Reliance Industries, Kolkata Knight Riders and Avram Glazer's Lancer Capital. In December 2023, the league became the first Associate member-run franchise league to be granted List A status by the International Cricket Council, giving official recognition to its matches and player statistics. The inaugural season in early 2023 reached 255.4 million fans in India and was the second most-watched league in that market.
White's appointment signals strategic intent to professionalize league operations. His background in cricket governance and rugby administration in New Zealand positioned him to address the league's operational complexity and international player logistics. The appointment comes after the league established itself as a credible T20 venue, with significant broadcast partnerships and institutional backing from major corporations. Under White's leadership, the ILT20 has developed grassroots pathways for UAE cricket development, expanded participation to include players from Saudi Arabia and Kuwait, and grown girls' cricket participation from approximately one thousand to over five thousand participants. The league's recent seasons have achieved 397 million unique viewers across broadcast platforms and established itself as one of the world's leading T20 competitions alongside established franchises like the Indian Premier League and Pakistan Super League.
